Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) is the product of the direct reduction of iron ore in the solid state by carbon monoxide and hydrogen derived from natural gas or coal. See more information about the production of DRI. Most gas-based direct reduction plants are part of integrated steel mini-mills, located adjacent to the electric arc furnace (EAF
In this study, production of sponge iron by direct reduction of oxides and the effect of reductant on metallization were investigated. In the first stage of the study, scale formed during hot rolling of slabs was reduced in a rotating furnace using solid and gas reductants. Coal was used as solid reductant and hydrogen released from the combustion reaction of LNG was used as the gas one. The

A new process for preparing high-purity iron (HPI) was proposed, and it was investigated by laboratory experiments and pilot tests. The results show that under conditions of a reduced temperature of 1075°C, reduced time of 5 h, and CaO content of 2.5wt%, a DRI with a metallization rate of 96.5% was obtained through coal-based direct reduction of ultra-high-grade iron concentrate.
The metal product of the above process is direct-reduced iron (DRI) that is not contaminated with carbon, due to lack of direct interaction between ore and carbon, as well as with various impurities that could potentially come from coke. This product contains about 1 % carbon and 90 % Fe.

In this study, the reduction temperatures were conducted using a microwave stove in the temperature range from 850 to 1250 ℃, and the C/O molar ratio was 1.1. The results show that the reduction process of red mud is governed by a carbon gasification reaction, and the apparent activation energy is 88.44 kJ/mol.
1.1 Direct Reduced Iron Direct reduced iron is produced by the reduction of iron ore by carbon monoxide and hydrogen, as illustrated in simplified form in the equations below: Fe 2O 3 + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO 2. Fe 2O 3 + 3H 2 → 2Fe + 3H 2O . There are several processes for direct reduction of iron ore, principally gas-based shaft furnaces

The microwave reduction yielded comparable concentrate iron grade-recovery with muffle furnace reduction at comparatively lower carbon dosage (6%), suggesting better carbon utilization. Meanwhile, coal-based microwave reduction followed the opposite trend as muffle furnace reduction, and iron grade decreases with an increase in carbon dosage.
3.1 Sponge Iron/Direct Reduced Iron — Itis the resulting product (with a metallization degree greater than 82 percent) of solid state reduction of iron ores or agglomerates (generally of high grade), the principal constituents of which are metallic iron, residual iron oxides carbon and impurities such as phosphorus,
Direct Reduced Iron (DRI): This iron production process directly reduces iron ore in solid-state with the reaction temperature below the melting point of iron. Reducing gases are produced from natural gas (gas-based DRI) or coal (coal-based DRI) called syngas, a mixture of H2 and CO.
The subsequent microwave reduction tests showed that the core-shell metallized pellets with the total iron content and metallization degree of 89.15% and 95.52%, respectively, could be obtained

Direct reduced iron ( DRI ), also called sponge iron, is produced from the direct reduction of iron ore (in the form of lumps, pellets, or fines) into iron by a reducing gas or elemental carbon produced from natural gas or coal. Many ores are suitable for direct reduction.
