High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are used for size reduction or rocks and ores. They compress the feed material between two rotating rollers, one of which is in a fixed position and another roller that is floating. The two rotating rollers generate such a high pressure that it grinds the feed material to the desired smaller grain size.

for ore and minerals processing Introduction High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) were introduced as a new grinding technology in 1984. Since then, they have been successfully installed in a large number of plants throughout the world, mainly for cement and limestone. More recently, HPGRs have also been applied in mineral processing plants,
footprint. In mining and mineral processing operations, energy is often the most expensive cost item. Comminution, i.e. grinding, is frequently the most energy-intensive step between mine and metal. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are being installed in a rapidly growing number of ‘hard rock’ mineral processing operations.

circuit products, and kinetic readings of the process were more favorable [13]. Comparable effects are evident when heap leaching other minerals from upstream ores treated by HPGR. The metal extraction rate for HPGR is 10–15% higher than that of conventional crushing devices [14]. 2.2. High Voltage Breakage

I think, the SAG/FAG cannot simply be compared with HPGR, taking account of their very different grinding process requirements and results, even the process is dry. As an example, if you expect to grind an ore from 200 mm size to 1 mm size, the use of the HPGR instead SAG/FAG requires the addition of 1…2 crushing phases, consequently the FAG/SAG cannot be replaced by HPGR only.
The high pressure comminution process causes micro-cracks in the particles, which lead to the liberation of minerals and a higher portion of fines. HPGR treated minerals show better leaching performance, because the micro-cracks increase the particle contact surface for the leaching liquid.
